Market report thurs 23rd April
April 26 2009The cold nights have certainly taken their toll on the quantity of flowers in the market, however the quality from our preferred growers is high. A lot of the field grown crops are affected as soon as the cold April nights set in, however having said that the field chrysy begin to flush naturally in these conditions, ready for Mothers Day which is now only 2 weeks away.
Our farm in Ballarat is no different, with Carnation numbers reducing considerably, whilst our quality is as good as we have seen. The green trick is flushing perfectly for Mothers Day, so if you haven’t tried this new variety, it is worth trying in the vase, as we have had customers saying they can get 4 weeks life out of them. Try a bunch with a bright coloured flower such as the hot pink carnation, or a rose for a striking feature vase.
We are starting to pick our glasshouse chrysanthemum, which is coming on very nicely. We have planted some new varieties this year, and are pleased with their quality. It is very comforting to have such good quality chrysanthemum this year, as supply is very limited over the mothers day period due to the high demand.
The ‘Disbud’ chrysanthemum are starting to come into the market, with this large headed variety a favourite over the mothers day period. We currently have these in stock so please come in and place orders for mothers day.
The alstromeria has been our bunch of the week this week. Supply is a bit limited due to the weather but the quality we are seeing is unbeatable, so we have seen our customers buying plenty.
With varieties becoming increasingly scarce at this time of year, it is to our advantage to have such great relationships with our growers to ensure our supply over the busy fortnight ahead, as some florists will miss out completely on some lines, or have to settle for a second grade product. If you are planning to get some flowers for home over mothers day, or to buy some for Mum, drop into stems and place your order nice and early.
